Since 2010, the Global Law Experts annual awards have been celebrating excellence, innovation and performance across the legal communities from around the world.
This GLE Round Table brought together practitioners from Oman and Qatar working across corporate law, foreign investment, tax, immigration and dispute resolution to examine the legal challenges facing businesses investing and operating in the Middle East. As the legal landscape varies considerably between markets, the discussion explored the structural and legal questions that determine whether and how businesses establish a presence or deploy capital, and how recent regulatory reforms have changed the options available to them.
It also examined how clients are using citizenship and residency by investment programmes, long-term visa frameworks and talent attraction schemes, and the compliance and due diligence considerations advisers should flag before clients commit to a particular programme or location. In addition, the discussion considered the practical fault lines that determine whether a client can realistically enforce their rights when a cross-border relationship or investment deteriorates into a dispute, and the lessons in-house counsel should build into contracts and governance arrangements before a problem arises.
