Akihiro Terai is a seasoned lawyer with over 20 years of experience in the legal field. He has extensive experience in a variety of legal areas including dispute resolution, corporate law, antitrust and competition law, and restructuring and bankruptcy. He is a member of Japan Association of Arbitrators and attained CIArb (Chartered Institute of Arbitrators) “Member” status.
Akihiro specializes primarily in dispute resolution, handling litigation and other forms of dispute resolution across a wide range of legal fields. This includes contractual disputes related to commercial transactions and M&A, torts, product liability, construction disputes, labor cases, and intellectual property disputes, as well as actions seeking the revocation of administrative dispositions under antitrust law, such as surcharge payment orders and cease and desist orders. He also possesses extensive experience representing overseas companies in litigation and other dispute resolution proceedings in Japan. For instance, for more than 10 years, he has handled a significant number of cases involving damages claims filed in Japanese courts against overseas airlines and freight forwarders under the Montreal Convention (Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air). In recent years, Akihiro Terai has strengthened his legal support for international disputes, providing comprehensive assistance from the drafting of dispute resolution clauses (such as arbitration clauses) in international transaction agreements to actual dispute resolution. Furthermore, he is equipped to handle international arbitration cases in collaboration with the registered foreign lawyers at Midosuji LPC.
Akihiro’s expertise further extends to corporate and antitrust/competition law. Having graduated from the University of Michigan Law School (LLM) in 2010 and obtained admission to the New York State Bar in 2011, he is a corporate lawyer able to handle both domestic and international legal matters for globally operating corporate clients, focusing on cases involving cross-border M&A, international cartels and other antitrust/competition law matters, as well as commercial transactions. Over the past years, he has started to take on matters related to the topic of “Business and Human Rights” (e.g., inquiries regarding sustainability and Environmental, Social, and Governance [ESG], including Human Rights Due Diligence [HRDD]), and is also providing consultation and other legal services concerning all aspects of group compliance, including overseas subsidiaries.
After graduation from Keio University and passing the bar examination in Japan, Akihiro was addmitted to the Japan Federation of Bar Associations in 2003. He further graduated from the University of Michigan Law School (LLM) in 2010 and obtained admission to the New York State Bar in 2011.
