Russia FAQ's

Russia has a civil law system based on codified statutes, with the Constitution as the supreme legal authority. Laws are primarily derived from written codes such as the Civil Code, Criminal Code, and Administrative Code. Judicial decisions do not serve as binding precedent as in common law systems, though higher court interpretations can influence lower court rulings.

In Russia, an advokat is a licensed legal professional authorized to represent clients in court, especially in criminal cases, after passing the bar exam and joining an Advokatura (Bar Chamber). A yurist is a broader term for anyone with legal education, such as in-house counsel or legal consultants, but they may not have the right to act as defense counsel in certain court proceedings.

Foreigners can start a business in Russia by registering a legal entity, such as an LLC (OOO) or joint-stock company, with the Federal Tax Service. This requires a legal address, founding documents, and registration fees. They can also invest through joint ventures or purchasing shares, but some sectors have restrictions, and compliance with Russian corporate and tax laws is essential.

A foreign citizen can obtain a residence permit in Russia by first securing a temporary residence permit, usually valid for three years, through quotas or specific exemptions (e.g., marriage to a Russian citizen, investment, or skilled work). After one year, they may apply for a permanent residence permit, subject to language, income, and legal compliance requirements.

Foreigners can buy property in Russia, such as apartments and commercial real estate, without restrictions. However, purchasing land has limitations—foreigners cannot own land in border zones or certain agricultural areas but may lease it or buy through a Russian legal entity. All transactions must comply with Russian property and registration laws.

Yes, Russia allows dual citizenship, but citizens must notify the Russian authorities within 60 days of acquiring another nationality. While dual citizens retain full Russian rights, they may still be treated solely as Russian citizens within Russia, meaning foreign consular protection may be limited.
