Professional Experience/Areas of Expertise
Walter Chen has over 28 years of experience in advising clients domestic and foreign on litigation and non-litigation matters. His areas of practice include international arbitration and litigation, cross-border investment and M&As, international trade, corporate, maritime, construction, and other foreign-related legal matters. He is one of the very few leading international dispute resolution practitioners in China who can effectively handle cases in both English and Chinese language as counsel and arbitrator.
Walter Chen has extensive experiences and a proven track record for handling complex and high- profile legal matters such as the automobile joint venture project between Jaguar Land Rover and Chery Automobile, which was rated as the “Best Deal of the Year 2012” by China Business Law Journal, Hong Kong; and the civil and commercial cases concerning disputes arising from cross- border investment, post-merger & acquisition disputes, joint venture contracts, international trade, guarantee and swap transactions, construction and Infrastructure projects, sale & purchase, shipping matter, insurance, agency agreement, letter of credit, banking, refund guarantee, shareholder disputes, product liability, construction contract dispute, as well as recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral award heard before Chinese courts at various levels, Hong Kong High Court, US Federal District Courts, CIETAC, SHIAC, and a variety of overseas arbitration institutions such as HKIAC, ICC, SIAC, LCIA, LMAA and WIPO, inter alia, by teaming up with an American law firm, he once successfully represented a well-known Chinese automobile enterprise in allegedly the largest case against Chinese business sued overseas with claimed sum of over USD 15 billion, which was transferred from a US federal district court and heard in HKIAC. He first represented a Chinese company in Hong Kong in 1995 in an arbitration of an international trade dispute against Samsung of Korea. He is now in the process of representing a Chinese client in Hong Kong against American Claimants in an ad hoc arbitration case with a claimed sum of over 10 billion RMB, and a nearly USD 400 million ad hoc arbitration case in Hong Kong.

Arbitration Experience
Apart from being legal counsel representing clients in ad hoc cases or before a variety of international and domestic arbitration tribunals, Walter Chen has over the years (he was appointed as member of panel of arbitrators by a local arbitration commission in Jiangsu, China in November 2000), sat as sole arbitrators, party-appointed arbitrators and presiding arbitrators in nearly 100 commercial cases in CIETAC, CMAC, HKIAC, DIFC-LCIA, CIETAC Hong Kong Center, BIAC, SCIA etc., applying among others UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, HKIAC Rules, DIFC-LCIA Rules, CIETAC Rules, BIAC Rules, SCIA Rules and SHAC Rules.
