A useful legal consultation should help you make a decision. You may need to respond to a demand, review a proposed agreement, recover money or understand the consequences of a family dispute. The advice should explain what your documents establish, which questions remain unanswered and what action is appropriate.
When searching for the best lawyers in Dubai, assess the quality of that explanation. An adviser should connect the law to your circumstances and show how the proposed next step serves your objective. This guide explains how to prepare for legal advice in the UAE and what to expect from a consultation or written opinion.
Start by identifying the immediate question. A request to review a contract may concern a specific decision about signing, renewing, terminating or enforcing it. Each instruction requires a different assessment.
Explain what you want to achieve and any practical constraints. A business may prefer to preserve a trading relationship while recovering overdue payments. An employee may need to understand a proposed settlement before accepting it. A parent may require advice about a school decision before the next term begins.
Provide the date by which a response is needed and explain where that date came from. A deadline stated in a demand letter may require a different analysis from a court deadline or a contractual notice period. Ask the adviser to confirm the deadline and who will take responsibility for the response.
Federal Decree Law No. 34 of 2022 regulates the legal profession and legal consultation profession in the UAE. Professional registration and the permitted scope of practice should be checked when appointing an adviser.
Before arranging a legal consultation in Dubai, you can check the proposed provider through the Legal Affairs Department’s directory of advocates, legal consultants and licensed firms.
The Dubai Legal Affairs Department reported 3,433 practising legal consultants across 139 licensed legal consultancy firms at the end of March 2026 in its quarterly update published on 7 April 2026. These figures describe Dubai’s legal consultancy sector; they are not a UAE-wide total or a ranking of individual providers.
Clarify whether you are commissioning advice, drafting, negotiations or representation. Dubai’s legal consultant registration permits legal services within its scope but excludes pleading and representing third parties before Dubai Courts. Where court representation is required, the team must include the appropriately authorised professional.
Ask who will provide the advice and whether another specialist needs to contribute. A consultation about company ownership, for example, may require a separate assessment of tax or succession questions. The engagement should identify the work included and how any additional advice will be arranged.
Legal advice in the UAE should explain both the legal rules governing the issue and the procedure for addressing it. The location of the parties, the nature of the transaction and any dispute resolution clause may require examination before a claim is filed.
If a matter has links to the DIFC, ADGM or another free zone, ask the adviser to assess the relevant jurisdiction and any applicable special rules. A contractual choice of law and an agreement about the court or arbitration process should each be considered.
Dates also matter. The Civil Transactions Law issued by Federal Decree Law No. 25 of 2025 took effect on 1 June 2026.
An opinion concerning an older transaction should identify the relevant events and explain which provisions govern the issue. Relying on an earlier article or contract template without checking its legal references may leave an important question unresolved.
Federal Decree Law No. 42 of 2022 contains the UAE Civil Procedure Code, including rules concerning jurisdiction, service, appeals and enforcement.
The adviser should identify any preliminary step, specialist procedure or urgent application relevant to the matter.
Prepare a short chronology supported by the principal documents. Include the signed agreement, amendments, notices, correspondence and payment records relevant to the question. Explain which documents are missing and whether another party holds them.
A dispute about an unpaid invoice illustrates the value of this preparation. The invoice records the amount requested. The contract, delivery records and correspondence may be needed to assess what work was agreed, whether it was completed and why payment is disputed.
Electronic material also deserves careful review. Articles 53 to 55 of Federal Decree Law No. 35 of 2022 address electronic evidence, including electronic correspondence and modern means of communication, and apply the rules of documentary evidence to it.
Preserve complete messages and their context, including attachments and dates. Ask how the evidence should be presented and whether its origin or authenticity may be challenged. A selected screenshot may omit information that changes the meaning of the exchange.
Online legal advice in the UAE can allow a client to obtain an initial assessment, discuss documents and agree further instructions without attending an office. The usefulness of the consultation depends on preparation and on the work the adviser has agreed to perform.
Send the relevant material through the firm’s agreed channel before the meeting. Confirm the identity of the adviser, the subjects to be covered and whether the fee includes document review or a written response.
For a business instruction, identify the entity receiving the advice and the person authorised to give instructions. For a personal matter, clarify whether anyone joining the call may receive information or communicate on your behalf.
A remote meeting may reveal a need for original documents, further verification or representation before an authority. Ask the adviser to specify those requirements and explain which parts of the instruction can be completed remotely.
A written opinion is particularly useful where several documents or competing interpretations affect the decision. Agree whether the instruction includes a preliminary assessment or a detailed review and which questions the opinion will answer.
The following elements help a client understand the basis and limits of the advice.
| Element | What the client should be able to identify |
|---|---|
| Instructions | The questions addressed and the intended objective |
| Material reviewed | The documents and information used in the assessment |
| Relevant facts | What is established, disputed or assumed |
| Legal analysis | How the applicable provisions affect those facts |
| Available options | The consequences and practical requirements of each route |
| Recommended action | The next step and any information still required |
An opinion should explain why a particular document or provision matters. If the conclusion depends on an assumption, that assumption should be visible. For example, advice on a guarantee may change if the signatory lacked authority or if a later agreement altered the obligation.
Ask for clarification where the reasoning is difficult to follow. You should understand what supports the recommendation and what further evidence could change it.
The best lawyers for legal advice in the UAE should help clients assess the consequences of the available choices. Depending on the matter, those choices may include requesting information, negotiating, serving a notice, seeking interim relief or commencing proceedings.
Ask what each step is expected to achieve and what response it may produce. A notice should be considered in light of its purpose, any requirements for service and the statements it contains. Before making a settlement offer, understand which claims it would resolve and how performance would be secured.
The assessment should also address possible defences and counterclaims. A client seeking payment needs advice about any alleged defect or deduction raised by the other party. The likely cost of proving the claim and the practical prospects of recovering money also belong in the discussion.
Lawyers in Dubai should tailor the review to the question presented. A contract consultation should address the obligations, the proposed action and the consequences of nonperformance. Employment advice should consider the applicable employment framework and the relevant contract, correspondence and payment records.
Family advice may require examination of nationality, residence, marriage documents and existing orders. Criminal legal advice requires a clear understanding of the allegation, the person’s procedural position and any summons or pending appointment. Bring the available official documents so the adviser can assess the immediate requirements.
For businesses buying creative work or software, the scope of intellectual property rights may be central. Article 9 of Federal Decree Law No. 38 of 2021 requires transfers or licences of an author’s economic rights to be recorded in writing, with the right, purpose, duration and place of use specified.
A review of a design agreement should therefore examine the rights granted and the intended use. Permission for one campaign may require different terms from rights to modify and reuse material across several products. The advice should address that intended use before the agreement is signed.
Ask for a written description of the consultation service and its fee. Confirm the documents to be reviewed, the meeting duration where relevant and whether written advice or subsequent questions are included.
A fee for an opinion may not include preparing a notice, negotiating with another party or filing proceedings. If the recommendation involves further work, request a proposal describing that work and the additional professional fees and expenses.
Identify who will implement the recommendation. The client may need to obtain records or approve a draft before the adviser can proceed. Where a deadline is approaching, agree responsibility for each task and a date for checking progress.
This discussion helps avoid uncertainty about whether a consultation has become an instruction to act. It also allows the client to budget for the next stage with a clear understanding of what is proposed.
Before the consultation ends, ask the adviser to confirm the principal conclusion, any outstanding evidence and the next action. Record the relevant deadlines and identify when the advice should be reviewed.
For example, a recommendation to negotiate may need reconsideration if a court claim is served or a significant document emerges. Keeping the adviser informed allows the assessment to respond to the facts as they develop.
Choosing a lawyer for legal advice in the UAE is ultimately an appointment to help resolve a defined problem. The advice should leave you able to explain your options, understand the proposed course and give informed instructions about what happens next.
