As traditional “Golden Visa” programmes across Europe are closed, restricted, or fundamentally reshaped, internationally mobile investors are increasingly looking to stable, well‑regulated, English‑speaking jurisdictions that offer both certainty and opportunity. In this context, New Zealand’s Active Investor Plus (AIP) visa has emerged as one of the most compelling residency‑by‑investment programmes globally.
New Zealand’s AIP visa is the country’s modern “Golden Visa” — a residency‑by‑investment programme designed to attract experienced, internationally connected investors who can contribute capital, expertise, and global networks to the New Zealand economy. Initially introduced in 2022 and substantially reformed in April 2025, the AIP visa has rapidly become one of the most competitive and successful investor migration programmes worldwide.
At its core, the AIP visa offers residence from day one in exchange for a qualifying investment and a commitment to maintain that investment over a defined period. Applicants must meet standard health, character, and source‑of‑funds requirements, but there is no English language requirement and no maximum age limit, making the visa very accessible to a wide range of high‑net‑worth individuals and families.
The programme offers two clear investment pathways:
Growth Category
Requires a minimum investment of NZD5 million (approximately USD 3 million) over three years, focused on higher‑impact investments approved by Invest New Zealand, the Government’s investment attraction agency. Approved investments include direct business investments as well as many private credit, private equity, and venture capital funds. The physical presence requirement is minimal — just 21 days in total over the three‑year period.
Balanced Category
Requires a minimum investment of NZD10 million (approximately USD 6 million) over five years, allowing a broader and more diversified investment portfolio. This can include Government and corporate bonds, listed equities, philanthropy, and certain property investments, alongside any approved Growth Category investments. The standard physical presence requirement is 105 days over five years, with reductions available where additional investment is made.
Successful applicants and their families, including partners and dependent children under 25 years of age, attain life-long New Zealand residence once their investment term and time‑in‑New‑Zealand requirements have been met.
The success of the AIP visa is reflected in the numbers. Since the April 2025 reforms, approximately 600 applications have been received from 33 different countries, representing potential investment of around NZD3.5 billion. Approximately 80% of applicants have selected the Growth Category, reflecting strong investor appetite for active, business‑focused investment. The programme’s success is driven not only by its clear and flexible policy settings, but also by fast processing times (typically one to two months) and the fact that many traditional Golden Visa jurisdictions, including Australia and several European countries, have materially restricted or closed their own programmes.
In a time of increasing geopolitical tension and global uncertainty, families seeking a safe haven, and the ability to secure future options, should seriously consider a small, friendly, English‑speaking, law‑abiding, self‑sufficient, forward‑thinking, rugby‑playing and naturally beautiful island nation in the South Pacific.
By combining clarity, flexibility, and speed, the Active Investor Plus visa has firmly repositioned New Zealand as a leading destination for globally mobile capital and entrepreneurial talent.
