Sources of Patent Law in Israel

The foundations of Israeli patent law are built upon a robust statutory and regulatory framework designed to safeguard innovation while aligning with global intellectual property standards. At the core of this framework lies the Patents Law, 5727–1967, Israel’s principal statute governing patentability, ownership, rights of inventors, and enforcement mechanisms. Complementing the statute are the Patents Regulations, which set out essential procedural requirements relating to office practice, documentation, timelines, fees, and rules of procedure before the Israel Patent Office (ILPO). Together, these instruments form the backbone of Israel’s national patent regime and establish the legal architecture used by patent practitioners, applicants, and rights holders. In addition, the ILPO Examination Guidelines serve as authoritative administrative guidance, offering detailed insight into examination standards, claim interpretation practices, and evolving approaches to emerging technologies.
